# Bangkok Blog > Bangkok in October 2026: the scams still running, the 30-day visa rule, prescription-only cannabis, smoke and heat seasons, and the boat that beats the tuk-tuk. An Ultimate Travel Guide (BootsnAll Travel Network) for Bangkok, Thailand. Updated 2026-10-02. Editorial, no ads, no affiliate links. Full record: https://www.bangkokblog.com/place.json ## Thesis Trust the river, the rails and the food stall. Not the helpful stranger. Bangkok's best-known scams are old, and they still work because they start with kindness. A well-dressed man outside the Grand Palace says it is closed for a ceremony. A tuk-tuk driver offers a 10-baht tour, said to be sponsored by the tourism ministry, that ends at a gem shop. A taxi driver waves off the meter and names a price. Governments and traveller guides have documented all three for years. The palace's own site says it is open daily from 8:30 to 15:30, and the ticket is 500 baht at the gate. The rule that covers nearly all of it: in tourist areas, discount the offer you did not ask for. The antidote is cheap and mostly public. The BTS and MRT cover the modern centre, and the Chao Phraya Express boat covers the old one, which had no rail at all until MRT Sanam Chai opened in 2019. Ride the Skytrain to Saphan Taksin, step onto an orange-flag boat for 18 baht, and you reach the Grand Palace pier, Wat Pho and the lanes behind Khao San Road without negotiating with anyone. Grab has been legal since 2021 and is useful for the trips the network misses. The cost is that fares stack across operators and have risen: the BTS now tops out at 65 baht, and boat fares tracked diesel prices up and down through 2026. Bangkok also changed its rules faster than most guides update. Since 15 September 2026 most Western passports get 30 visa-free days, down from 60. Every arrival needs the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card, and fake sites charge for it. Cannabis went back to prescription-only in June 2025, though shops on Khao San still trade. The long-promised tourist entry fee is still a proposal, now 450 baht, aimed at 2027. Add the weather. The cool months from November are also when PM2.5 smoke builds, and by April the heat index can top 52C. Whatever season you pick, check the air monitor before you plan your outdoor days. None of this is a reason to stay away. It is the reason the city rewards a traveller who eats where the queue is Thai, walks Chinatown on a weekday, and treats the boat as the main road it used to be. ## PlaceScore 7.0/10 (editorial v1) - Value: 7.5/10. Near the 8 anchor: a dorm bed mostly 250 to 500 baht, a cheap meal around 100 baht and rail rides from 17 baht, held back by rising fares and tourist-priced headline sights like the 500-baht palace ticket. - Getting around: 7/10. Between 5 and 8: BTS, MRT and the express boats cover what most visitors do and Grab is legal, but the old town has one MRT station, fares stack across operators, and refusing passengers is the top complaint against taxis. - Crowds and timing: 5/10. At the 5 anchor: the pleasant cool season is also smoke season (city average PM2.5 58.1 against a 37.5 standard in January 2026), and by late April the heat index reaches 'extreme danger', so the calendar decides a lot. - Safety and hassle: 6/10. A little above the 5 anchor: low violent risk for visitors, but the scams are constant around the main sights, all of them long documented and avoidable once you know them. - Food and drink: 9/10. Near the 10 anchor: good food is rarely more than 100 m away and a cheap meal costs about 100 baht, docked a point because the city has cleared more than 60% of its mobile vendors since 2022. - Indie fit: 7.5/10. Near 8: the river, Chinatown and Thai-crowd markets are easy to reach alone and cheaply, though the default backpacker path runs through Khao San Road, which is now heavily commercial. ## Bullshit flags - Claim: "The Grand Palace is closed today for a ceremony; let me show you another temple." Reality: The palace says it opens daily, 8:30 to 15:30, with tickets at the gate (500 baht) or online up to a month ahead. This exact line is the opening of the classic gem scam: the tout steers you to a cheap tuk-tuk that ends at a jewellery shop. Walk to the Mani Noppharat Gate and check for yourself. - Claim: "Ten-baht tuk-tuk tour today, sponsored by the tourism ministry, with a stop at a gem shop where you can buy cheap and resell at home." Reality: Canada's travel advice warns that these merchants sell lower-quality stones at inflated prices on a resale promise that is not honoured. Wikivoyage puts it more bluntly: the gems are cut glass, and the driver earns a commission or fuel coupons for bringing you. If you have already paid, call the Tourist Police on 1155. - Claim: "Meter's broken. Flat price to Sukhumvit." Reality: Ordinary taxis start at 35 baht on the meter. In five months to February 2024 the DLT's 1584 line logged 2,291 complaints about refused passengers and 1,054 about drivers not using the meter, and refusing a fare carries a fine of up to 1,000 baht. Get out and take the next cab, or book through Grab, which has been legal since 2021. - Claim: "Weed is legal in Thailand, so grab some on Khao San." Reality: Since June 2025 cannabis has been medical-use only and buying it needs a prescription. The UK government tells visitors they must not buy, possess or use it otherwise. Shops still trade openly in tourist areas, but an open shop does not make the sale legal, and more than 7,000 shops closed when their licences came up for renewal. - Claim: "Skip the riding and do an ethical elephant-bathing sanctuary day." Reality: World Animal Protection's 2026 survey of 236 venues found more than half of captive tourist elephants at washing or care venues, often marketed as sanctuaries, where the animals are made to interact with strangers. Two thirds live in poor conditions. Only 7.3% are at observation-only venues, and those are the ones to look for. - Claim: "Every train in Bangkok is a flat 20 baht now." Reality: The 20-baht cap was for Thai nationals registered with a national ID in the Tang Rat app, and Thai PBS found it was never fully rolled out. Until November 2026 the scheme in force is a 40-baht day pass on the Purple and Red lines. Visitors pay distance fares: BTS up to 65 baht, MRT 17 to 44. ## What has changed - 2025-05-01: The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) replaced the paper TM.6 form for every foreign arrival by air, land or sea, submitted within 3 days before arrival. It is free at tdac.immigration.go.th. In March 2026 immigration warned that at least 10% of arrivals had used look-alike sites charging fees. - 2025-06-26: Cannabis went back to medical use only, with a prescription needed to buy, under an order signed on 24 June 2025. A 2023 guide's 'weed cafes' advice is now a legal risk. Licensed shops fell by 7,297 when renewals came due. - 2026-09-15: Visa-free stays cut from 60 to 30 days for 60 countries including the US, UK and Australia, for tourism only. Visa-exempt entry is normally limited to two entries a year. A slow two-month Bangkok stay now needs an extension or a visa, and visa runs by land are capped. - 2026-09: The tourist entry fee is still a proposal: a flat 450 baht for all foreign visitors went to public consultation until 28 September 2026, with collection aimed at 2027. No fee is collected yet. Ignore any guide or site that asks you to pay one now. - 2026-04: The BMA opened a hawker centre beside Lumphini Park, its fifth in recent years, as mobile vendor numbers fell more than 60% from 2022. Some favourite carts have moved indoors or closed. Hawker centres and markets are where many of them went. - 2026-08: Fares moved: BTS capped at 65 baht from November 2025, MRT Blue Line 17 to 44 baht from July 2026, and Chao Phraya boat fares rose and fell with diesel prices in 2026, with the orange flag at 18 baht from 21 August. Budget a little more for a day of rail and boat hops than an older guide suggests. ## Costs (THB, 2026-10-02) - A hostel dorm bed: 250 to 500 per night - A private room in a hostel: 300 to 1260 per night - A meal at an inexpensive restaurant: 60 to 250 per meal - BTS Skytrain single trip: 17 to 65 single trip - MRT Blue Line single trip: 17 to 44 single trip - Chao Phraya Express, orange flag: 18 any distance - Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew: 500 per foreign adult - A pint of local draught beer: 60 to 174 per pint ## Sources - [My Year in Cities: 2009](https://sean.keener.org/travel/my-year-in-cities-2009.html) (sean.keener.org, read 2026-10-02) -
